Question: I'm shopping for some binoculars/spotting scope that I can see about a mile away, I have a pair of binoculars that are 50x50 168 ft @ 1000yd, they work but not that good.What type of binoculars/spotting scope can I use to bring things closer? A telescope is to big for me to handle.

Answer: There are many instances when a pair of usual 7x to 10x binoculars can be inadequate either because of lack of magnification or clarity. This is where a spotting scope comes in handy. Spotting scopes offer more magnification than binoculars and can help you locate targets at extreme distances that can be missed by observers with binoculars. Generally sold with zoom type eyepieces in either 15-45x or 20-60x magnifications and used with a tripod for stability, these will allow you to identify or observe animals at distances beyond the reach of your binoculars.

Question: yes, both of them are the opposites, but theres a common hurdle to overcome:- focusing. im not looking for something to hold the camera to the binoculars, i just want to snap. i use a Canon A430, which has the capability to disable autofocus, but i still get an absolutely blurred image on the screen, may it be from a microscope or a binocular. is it possible to take clear images ? will it work with an analog camera?

Answer: You either need to remove the eyepiece of the instrument or focus your camera at infinity so that the focal plane of the lens is right at the CCD. I have done the latter with microscopes, telescopes and binoculars and it works very well with my cannon powershot (no endorsement intended). To make sure that your camera is focused at infinity, disable the autofocus, take it outside and manually focus a very distant object (something that is farther than 500 ft).

Question: I want to get someone a set of binoculars for christmas, he uses them for hunting. I only want to spend about 50 dollars on them, anyone have any advice about brand or type or something? I'm thinking either Gander Mountain or Fleet Farm?

Question: How is light used differently to view under a compound microscope and a binocular microscope?

Answer: The compound microscope allows for greater magnification than the dissecting microscope. Compound microscopes use a rotating nose with three different objective lenses offering different magnifications---typically up to 40x. The dissecting microscope has no rotating nose and offers magnification up to 30x. The compound microscope uses one light source located under the sample and utilizes an iris and a condenser that allow you to alter the direction and amount of light you use. Question: For e.g. an 8x optical zoom in a camera and an 8x magnification in a 8x40 binocular?? Is there any difference between these 2, or are they the same??

Answer: no, they are not the same. When a camera says it has 8x optical zoom, you must first known the effective highest focal length. If the widest is 35 mm 8x that is 280 mm. A camera of about 105 mm is equivalent to about 1x of a binoculars, so 8x in binoculars is about 840 mm in a camera. It is not completely so simple as that though because digital cameras today are 10 meg pix and even more. That means that you can blow up an 4x6 picture into 8x12 or even larger. You do not see such a large picture through binoculars. In fact some binoculars have a somewhat restricted field of view. What I am attempting to say is that by blowing up the photo you might possibly get as large an image as you might see through the binoculars.
